The economic fallout of the confinement measures taken in developing countries is already being felt. South Africa is no exception. According to the Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism, 55% of informal settlement residents in South Africa currently have no money for food. South African Food Sovereignty Campaign co-founder Vishwas Satgar said their estimates were that the number of “food-stressed people” had doubled from last year to 30-million. In the midst of this crisis, some inspiring initiatives have been launched. StellCare, which is currently distributing food parcels to affected communities, is one of them. A team of AFDers from Leuven and Stellenbosch have engaged themselves with StellCare to provide help in these crisis times.
