Oxfam-Wereldwinkels

Oxfam-Wereldwinkels (Belgium) is a democratic volunteer movement that strives towards fair trade in order to defend the universal right for a dignified life. They believe fair trade gives producers in the Global South a chance of reducing the risk of poverty by improving their negotiating position.

Oxfam-Wereldwinkels aims to raise awareness on wrongdoings in world trade via public campaigns, actions with youths and schools, and by having a dialogue with politicians and companies. And, of course, by advocating fair trade in their 235 specialty shops (‘wereldwinkels’).

project details

What: Improve gender related policy in cooperative organizations by carrying out a comparative study of 2 to 3 coffee cooperatives

When: Preparation Phase: October – June
Implementation Phase: 4-6 weeks in July/August

Where: Uganda

About the project

The main goal of the project is to carry out a comparative study regarding gender related policy in cooperative organizations. Project students will be expected to study relevant literature, review current legislation towards women, and to visit two or three coffee cooperatives in Uganda in order to analyze their policy towards female members.

Since Oxfam-Wereldwinkels would like to encourage cooperatives they work with to review and improve their gender related policy, the study should include an overview of good and bad practices regarding policy towards women and a list of measures every cooperative can take to improve their gender policy.
