Paadhai, South-India

Paadhai empowers underprivileged children in India to grow up to be defensible adults, so that they can have every opportunity for a dignified future. They achieve this by providing shelter and education to these underprivileged children. On top of this they work hard to strengthen the position of women within the Indian society by offering microcredits, education and training.

About the project

“All who wander are not lost.” – J.R.R Tolkien

And you definitely won’t get lost when you get a full tour operated by a local tourism bureau that’s not only trying to provide a path towards a life enhancing experience for you, but even more so for the women & children that live there through education, microcredits & shelter.

“So, how can I help?”,  you ask?

Our answer to that, of course, is talk to your inner social entrepreneurial spirit. What did you expect, it’s how we roll here at Academics For Development. The idea here is to help in the upstart of a local tourism bureau that will generate revenue to support the activities of Paadhai whilst upholding the values they fight for, being a stronger social position for women and offering a strong foundation for underprivileged children to later on flourish.

Should you apply for this project and be accepted these would be your concrete goals amongst others:

  • Development of local employment for students in tourism and other graduates for administrative support. This will provide an income for their future families.
  • Where and when possible engage female employees to strengthen the position of female students and provide the means for an independent life (no forced marriage).
  • To generate an income for our local partner Paadhai India in order to continue the function of the two shelter homes and local projects.
  • To provide travel arrangements for a wide range of budget, with low impact on the environment and maximal contact with Indian culture and social community.

The biggest part of your work here in Belgium would consist of the creation of a business plan for the different stages with a clear budget and milestones for each stage of the plan. You will then implement the project in the summer months of July and August during 6-8 weeks.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for 4-6 excellent and highly motivated students, with good knowledge of the English language. Students of all academic backgrounds are allowed to apply. However, for this project we are especially looking for students with backgrounds or special interest in:
