But what is AFD?
Academics for Development (AFD) is an international organisation inspired by social entrepreneurship. Our organisation is built on two pillars: Projects and Events. Through organizing these pillars we strive to give students the opportunity to have a hands on, multidisciplinary and entrepreneurial experience and the ability to make a meaningful social impact in local communities and the world at large. We want to give students the ambition to take initiative to make a difference for society.
To enable us to realize these pillars we are looking for you as new board member! How about using and boosting your academic skills in the next year? You can put your education into practice while obtaining a lot of valuable know-how and expertise. A board year with AFD gives you the opportunity to develop yourself both personally and professionally while also having loads of fun!

President and Vice-President
Your Role
- You are the head of the board team and you are therefore responsible for the well-functioning of the teams, which include leading the weekly board meetings and regularly attending team meetings to support and evaluate their progress.
- You are responsible to keep good contact with the different faculties, and are the bridge between the faculties and the students.
- You are the external face of the organisation and meet with partner organisations and business partners.
- You monthly update towards members of the General Assembly, and actively participate in the General Assembly meetings.
- You are responsible to keep good contacts, look for new synergies and further stimulate cooperation with other AFD branches.
- You actively take part in all recruiting activities, and are part of the selection panel.
- You take the initiative to further strengthen interfaculty cooperation.
Your profile
- You are a bachelor or master student with strong leadership abilities
- You have a healthy interest in development cooperation and social entrepreneurship.
- You have a creative, proactive and have a positive mindset.
- You are a process-oriented and result-driven person that can handle a wide range of responsibilities with ease.

Marketing and Communication
Your role
- You are responsible for spreading the word of AFD to the outside world.
- You will create the designs that AFD will use for their communication.
- You keep the social media up to date about the AFD events and the AFD project students (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram).
- You come up with creative ideas for marketing campaigns
- You will support the communication to the participants of our events
- You will look for opportunities to present AFD in the press.
- You support the other board members in their communication to students, partners and faculties.
Your profile
- You are a bachelor or master student, preferably in Antwerp
- You have a creative mindset.
- You are able to make designs or you have the willingness to learn how to design.
- You have an excellent knowledge of English.
- You are able to work organized and precisely.
- You believe in AFD’s vision and mission and you cannot wait to tell the rest of the world about it.

Events
Your role:
- You are in charge of organizing our events. This includes finding the right partners (together with the PR team), keeping professional contact with them, finding locations, catering, logistics…
- You organize events about social entrepreneurship and sustainability in order to reach the broader student community. An event can for example be a lecture with (an) interesting speaker(s), a debate, an event in partnership with interesting companies, social entrepreneurs…
- You keep in touch with speakers/partners in preparation to your event and provide them with all necessary information.
- You make sure you timely book appropriate auditoria or other locations.
- You provide some drinks and snacks for the receptions after events
- You should make a detailed action plan (who does what, where and when).
Your profile
- You are a bachelor or master student, preferably in Antwerp
- You don’t need a lot of experience. Some common sense, organisation skills, time management and a sense for entrepreneurship will do.
- You are a polite and spontaneous person, willing to engage with new partners.
- You can come up with a short-term action plan in case a something goes wrong (for example, a speaker cancels).
- You work rather precisely and are a good planner.

Partner Relations
Your role
- You search for new possible partners with whom AFD can establish a structural partnership.
- You search for potential partners for our events
- You attend networking events to explore new partners and visit these partners personally to ensure that every partner receives personal attention.
- You are responsible for maintaining the close ties AFD has with its partners.
- You and your team will look into alternative sources of income, including but not limited to for instance government subsidies and grants for our events.
Your profile
- You are a bachelor or master student, preferably in Antwerp
- You possess the necessary people skills to initiate and maintain partner contact.
- You are a polite and spontaneous person, willing to engage with new partners.
- You are eager to network, attend events and maintain contact with partners.
- You are interested in developing and maintain contacts in the business world, as well as with NGOs or 4th pillar organizations such as Oxfam.
Your commitment

Project Development
Your role
- Responsible for the development & selection of the projects for the academic year 2022-2023.
- Attend networking and partner events.
- You are the contact person for interested project partners and set up meetings and/or (Skype) calls with them.
- Maintain contact with these partners and help them define a qualitative project.
- You are responsible for the formulation of projects and are the point of contact regarding all project-related issues.
Your Profile
- Bachelor or master student, preferably in Antwerp
- You can set deadlines for yourself and respect them.
- You are well organised with regard to meetings and email conversations.
- You are determined and have a critical attitude towards the project content, the quality of the project partner and the general environment of the project location.
- You are a creative thinker and you can think along with partners to come up with a suitable & valuable project.

Project Coordinator
Your Role
- You are responsible for the overall guidance of the social entrepreneurship projects.
- Monitor the project progress and handle any issues that arise.
- You are the go-to person for everything involving a project’s organization, timeline and communicate project status to all participants.
- You are the bridge between:
- The project partner
- Communicate on a regular base with project partners.
- Make sure that the project partners’ needs are met as the projects evolve.
- The coaches
- Recruit coaches who have project experience.
- Communicate regularly with the coaches to follow up the team dynamics and project evolvement.
- The project students
- Recruit project students.
- Organize relevant workshops (project management skills, pitching, …) in order to boost the project content.
- Ensure that the project students have the support structure they need to perform their tasks to the best of their abilities.
- The project partner
Your profile
- You are a bachelor or master student, preferably in Antwerp.
- You are a process-oriented and result-driven person that can handle a wide range of responsibilities with ease.
- You are a strong communicator.
- You have solid organizational and time-management skills.
- You have a heart for development cooperation.
Your Commitment
- Ability to commit to this position for one academic year.
- Ability to dedicate part of your time to AFD next to your studies.

Finance
Your role
- You are responsible for the accountancy and tax preparations of the organisation, for which you get support from one of our partners.
- You are in charge of budgeting, both before the start of the academic year and during the academic year, to make sure that AFD stays financially viable.
- You are actively involved in setting up/maintaining the financial plan of the organisation.
- You manage subsidy applications with the government and the University
Your profile
- You are a bachelor or master student.
- You show the willingness to learn how and to set up budgeting proposals and cash flow statements.
- You are good with numbers and not afraid to work with Excel.
- You are a very structured person who can communicate in a clear and concise manner with the rest of the team.
- You have good social skills and you are a team player.
- Some experience with accounting is a plus.
