Clothes make the (wo)man.
The earth hosts a huge diverse group of people and clothing is one of the most obvious ways to spot our differences and similarities. Clothing is embedded in culture, religion and nationality. Clothing is also a way to express yourself and for many people, clothing is essential to the way they live.
But this need for self-expression also has big downsides. Child labour in East-Asia and other parts of the developing world is one of these downsides. The growing pressure on the global climate by the clothing industry is another. The rising trend of ‘fast fashion’ in the West has been one of the biggest contributing factors in these growing ecological and societal problems. But how big are these issues exactly? And what role can science, the business world, the government and we, the consumer, play in fighting them? Becoming aware of the issues we’re facing and discussing these questions gives us valuable insight into the world of clothing and the many sustainable solutions surrounding it.
By inviting three guest speakers on the 18th of February, we will explore the issues relating to the clothing industry in an informative and interactive session. The end goal: becoming aware of what you wear!
THE SPEAKERS:
The first speaker is Anneke Smelik, a Radbout University professor, specialised in Visual Culture. Her current research focuses on slow fashion and issues of sustainability, as well as technological advances in fashion.
Eva, from the social enterprise MudJeans, will tell us more about the mission of the company: creating new jeans out of old ones and working completely according to the principles of a circular economy.
Our last speaker, Henriëtte-Floor, works for the NGO ReShare, part of the Salvation Army. She will tell us more about the mission of ReShare and also has a bit of insight into the actions the government take in fighting problems in the clothing industry
Join us on the 18th, let these interesting speakers expand your knowledge of the clothing industry and become conscious of what you wear!

What will you be eating in 2050?
Our current food system is one of the biggest catalysers of the most pressing environmental issues. Moreover, the population keeps growing and growing, with less and less resources available. This is creating a big shortfall between the amount of food we produce today and the amount needed to feed everyone in 2050.
As incomes rise, people will increasingly consume more resource-intensive, animal-based foods. At the same time, we urgently need to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agricultural production and stop conversion of remaining forests to agricultural land. This calls for questions on how to make our food production more sustainable. How will we sustainably feed a constantly growing population? And what is necessary to make changes to more sustainable forms of food production? How do we motivate our population to consume these sustainable alternatives?
Fortunately a lot of entrepreneurs and consumers are already challenging the way we currently think about, produce and consume food. Many people are adapting a vegan lifestyle, restaurants are putting insects on the menu, scientists are experimenting with lab grown meat and many entrepreneurs are finding solutions to reuse food waste.
By inviting several guest speakers that are paving the way, like @buggznl, we will explore the issues relating to the future of our food industry in an informative and interactive session. The end goal: becoming aware of what you eat!

Academics For Development is a global student organization founded on social entrepreneurship. Every year we organize hands-on projects across the world and on-campus events. Through these projects and events, we strive to give students the opportunity to enrich themselves and have durable social impact.
But what the heck is social entrepreneurship?! How can 1 person have such an impact? And what does that even mean, durable social impact?
🔸 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧🔸
During this 1 hour during event, we want to inspire you and clarify…
… How you, as a student, can have real impact through social entrepreneurship
… What it means to be part of AFD
For the first part we therefore invited two inspiring speakers who will each tell you a story on how they got in touch with social entrepreneurship
→ Speaker 1: Laurens De Poorter is an MBA Candidate at Harvard Business School and the co-founder of TeleCorona and AFD. He will tell the story on how he encountered social entrepreneurship for the first time.
→ Speaker 2: Diane Delava is an expert on the topic of social entrepreneurship and co-founder of Mattrvest, an inclusive impact investment firm. She will tell you the story on how she was able to pull off her start-up.
Finally, we will provide you with some information on what it means to be part of our international student organization. We will represent the different branches from all across the world, our mission and the different functions involved. Time is foreseen for you to ask all your questions regarding the organization and the stories of our speakers.
‼️ Reserve a spot via the ticket link. Registering is free, afterwards you you will receive the link to join the session.
