Proyecto La Colorada, PERU

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

The project, based in Pucallpa, Peru, focuses on reforestation and sustainable vanilla cultivation as a means to restore local ecosystems and support rural communities. Trees are planted to improve water retention, prevent forest fires and droughts, and strengthen biodiversity in the region. In parallel, vanilla orchids, which grow naturally on trees without harming them, are introduced as a valuable crop to generate income for small-scale farmers. The project involves ecological research to identify suitable vanilla species and optimal growing conditions, alongside social research to assess the economic potential for local farmers. It also explores the creation of a farmers’ cooperative to ensure long-term impact and fair collaboration. Fieldwork includes testing planting methods, monitoring crop health, and engaging with the local population. The final goal is to develop a sustainable land-use model that integrates forest regeneration with community-driven agriculture.
