When:
PREPARATION PHASE: OCTOBER – JUNE
IMPLEMENTATION PHASE: 6-8 WEEKS IN JULY AND AUGUST

Where: CAMARINES NORTE, PHILIPPINES

Applications Deadline: 3rd of October 2020

About the project

Camarines Norte, Philippines, is specifically known for the processing of pineapples, which is extensively cultivated by poor family’s. Currently the pineapples are mainly processed for juice with a recovery of 22.5%. This means that every year around 74 MT pineapple waste is created and remains unused. The waste is believed to be acidic and therefore composes a big problem to local farmers. Together with LPMPC (Labo Progressive Multi-Purpose Cooperative) the students will participate in the development of economically viable, value-added products from the byproducts of pineapples, such as fertilizers or feeds which could be used by farmers. In addition, they will also have to create a business and marketing plan to provide income from these by-products. The partners want to pay special attention to the youth, considering the large percentage of Filipino youth who are not attending school and are unemployed.

The preparation phase will consist of:

– Conducting research on viable products from pineapple waste

– Designing a marketing strategy

– Conducting market research for recommended products and presenting a feasibility study

– Developing standardized process flow, standard operating procedures and machine requirements

The goals during the implementation phase are:

– Providing support in the development of a marketing plan

– Supporting the management to operationalize the business in terms of training the production head and staff
