About the project
Development and theatre, an odd combination that is at the heart of Studio Zambia. Studio Zambia is small foundation. It’s creation was the result of an cooperation between Academics For Development, the Dutch non-profit organisation Studio52nd, a local actors group in Zambia (SEKA) and a charitable education project partner in Zambia: Project Luangwa. Studio Zambia’s goal is to achieve positive social impact on the communities in the Luangwa Valley by opening the discussion on socially relevant taboo subjects and empowering the youth. Through the PlayWriting-method of Studio 52nd the youth of Luangwa get an opportunity to write down their own stories concerning a topic in the form of a theatre play or radio show.
Studio Zambia has been active in Zambia for a couple of years and is ready for the next step: to become a (financially) self-sustaining organization which is driven by a local, Zambian entity. We reached this ideal in three years, with the help of AFD Utrecht. First, we asked the project-students to set up a (social)-business plan on how to achieve our ideals. After this was done, the project students engaged in activities related to executing the theatre- and radiomaking activities in the summer of 2019 as well as executing the business model that the students put forward.
