Joker/ViaVia, Uganda
Joker (1981) is a Belgian alternative travel agency, considered as pioneer in sustainable tourism. Joker/ViaVia created a hybrid network from the start, where profit and social profit enterprises are developed under the same mission. Or tourism as a source for intercultural encounters, increased tolerance and socio-economic development. Viavia Entebbe mixes adventure and travel with a positive impact on the community, the environment and the economy, while stimulating cultural exchange. Pieter Huybrechts and Lobke Vermeulen, together with their staff, work on a clean environment in their guesthouse by collecting and sorting their waste and establishing composting practices. The idea is to spread this knowledge and involve the local community into the story of a sustainable waste management system where planet, people and profit go hand in hand.

About the project
A place for community assembly and environmental education for sustainable practices will be created where the community can collect and recycle their waste. The establishment will be called VRACC, this stands for ViaVia Recycling, Awareness and Collection Centre. VRACC strives to achieve a sustainable cooperation with respect for social, economical and environmental aspects, by and with the local community. Previous visits to the study area recognize different independent stakeholders, acknowledging the potential of their independence and their potential synergy effects. Therefore there is potential in bringing these stakeholders together to realise the project. The aim is to give the community the possibility to dump their waste at the proposed collection point, to give them access to the open platform, education and a community workshop, as well as access to the market of products produced on site and services provided. In this first stage of the project, the workshops will be focused on plastic re- and upcycling. We want to create attractive products that are sustainable and practical. We will supply raw materials (glass, paper, PET, compost) in a convenient way and at a low cost. We will try to create an accessible place for and by the community where people can create what they need for a low price in our workshop. The project will allow the students to work together with the partner and the local community to develop VRACC and in this way introduce a sustainable waste management system.
