About the project
The past decade, world-wide traveling and thus also tourism in Uganda, has known a considerable growth. This has undeniably a positive impact on job creation and economic growth in the country, while at the same time contributing to the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
However, not everyone is benefitting from these developments. Not only, does it often fail to reach positive transformations in communities or boost local economies. If not “done right”, it may also contribute to existing tensions and conflicts. Therefore, the peace sensitive tourism project pursuits a tourism environment that induces positive change and a stable, peaceful environment. With their idea they want to achieve higher awareness of previously mentioned issues as well as offering a practical guidance for players in the tourism sector.
The purpose of this project is to set a up a practical guide for players in the Ugandan tourism sector on how to assess the impacts of their activities and how to develop ethical and socially-just tourism products. The AFD peace-sensitive-tourism team will aid with the establishment of clear guidelines according to the “Do No Harm” principles.
If you apply for this project and get accepted for the team, the following would be, amongst others, your challenges and goals:
– To write a practical business guide for peace sensitive tourism
– To set up a training program for tourism players in Uganda
– To establish certification system for tourism businesses
– To develop a business plan for this new social business with as core activity the certification and training service
During the preparation months in Belgium you will mainly concentrate on the development of the theoretical aspects of the project such as the guide, training program, certification system and business plan. While during the implantation phase of 6 weeks in July and August, you will make sure the social business’ services are applicable in the Ugandan context.
