The SHE Project – Kayamandi, South Africa
The SHE (Students Helping Entrepreneurs Project) was launched in 2018 by AFD and has since been running. Addressing the problems of fast fashion and providing affordable quality clothing to low-income households, led AFD to develop the SHE Project. The aim is to train and teach the skills necessary to run a secondhand clothing market to the general public, in this instance we identified a target market in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch. Zingiswa, the first business entrepreneur we trained, has alongside AFD run four market days at the Kayamandi Tourism Centre during 2019. A growth rate of 98% was observed from the first market to the fourth one. There is massive potential for Zingiswa and other women in the community to create a successful and sustainable market.
