Who doesn’t love food?

Food is part of everyone’s life. It is essential for survival, embedded in culture, it brings people together, and more often than not, it just tastes damn good. There is, however, a downside to the marvelous world of food that we don’t love.

The problem is clear: in today’s world, food brings along a wide variety of societal and ecological issues and food waste is becoming more and more ordinary business. With the growing world population and the increasing mass food production, the problems society faces are growing out of proportion. What are these food-related problems exactly? How big are the issues in The Netherlands? And what role can science, the business world and we, the consumer, play in fighting it? Discussing these questions gives a valuable insight into the world of food waste and the structural and practical solutions surrounding it.

By inviting three guest speakers, we will explore the food waste issue in an informative and interactive session. Join us on the 12th of November and find out just how good waste can taste!

SPEAKERS:
The first speaker is Jenneke Heising, a Wageningen University researcher, specialised in food quality and design. Through the media, she strives to participate in activities outside of the academic world, to engage a wider public with the science of food and food waste.

Thijs is the proud owner of the enterprise Thijsthee, which produces refreshing iced tea from fruits that would’ve otherwise been thrown away. He can tell us more about social entrepreneurship and the challenges startups face in the food business.

Social enterprise Too Good To Go reduces food waste by providing a digital link between restaurant and consumer. Leftover food at restaurants is sold to the consumer at a reduced price. A goal of TooGoodToGo is to make consumers more aware of their own actions revolving food waste and offers practical solutions.

Get ready to be inspired by these speakers and find out how we can tackle food waste together!
